TLDR: Minnesota has started the season with 2 wins and has given up 2 goals in them. Buffalo has 1 win and has already given up 9. On Tuesday, October 6, the team that has looked complete so far plays the team that is still working out what it has.

Minnesota comes to Buffalo after allowing 2 goals in 2 wins, behind Kaprizov, Hughes, a power play that scores and a perfect penalty kill in the opener. The Sabres have outshot opponents but leaked goals: 6 in Columbus, then 3 on about 15 shots in a comeback win over Chicago that Kulich finished. Both teams are short in goal, and the board has not posted a price yet.

Minnesota Wild
  • Power play scored twice to beat Boston
  • Kaprizov has scored in both games
  • Wallstedt has allowed 2 goals in 2 starts
  • Faber out after skull fracture surgery, no timetable
  • Gustavsson on IR, little goalie depth
  • Fell behind early against Boston
Buffalo Sabres
  • Outshot Chicago roughly 28 to 15
  • Kulich back from blood clot and scoring
  • Thompson had a goal and an assist in the home opener
  • 9 goals allowed in 2 games
  • Lyon and Leinonen both on IR
  • Trailed Chicago after both the 1st and 2nd

The Wild have won 2 straight, and their stars are the reason. Kirill Kaprizov has a goal in both games. Quinn Hughes set up Kaprizov's goal in the 3-1 opener in Nashville, then scored his own on the power play in the 4-1 home win over Boston. That Bruins game started slowly, and Boston led after 1. Then Minnesota's power play scored 2 in the 2nd period and the game was over. The Wild also killed every penalty in Nashville. Special teams are winning their games for them, and good special teams usually last.

Both teams are short in goal. Minnesota put Filip Gustavsson (hip) on injured reserve before the season, and Jesper Wallstedt has handled the net so far: 19 saves in Nashville and only Boston's early goal at home. Buffalo is in worse shape. Alex Lyon and Topias Leinonen are both on injured reserve, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was in net for the win over Chicago. Neither team has named a goalie for this game, but whoever starts for either side will have a thin group behind him. The board hasn't posted a number on this one yet.

The Sabres' first week has gone both ways. They lost 6-3 in Columbus to open the season. Then they came home and beat a Blackhawks team that had lost its first 2, but Chicago led 2-1 after the 1st and 3-2 after the 2nd before Buffalo scored the last 2 goals. Tage Thompson had a goal and an assist, and Rasmus Dahlin and Jack Quinn also scored. The best news was Jiri Kulich. He missed most of last season with a blood clot, and his snipe at 4-on-4 midway through the 3rd was his first goal in 11 months and won the game.

The shot count against Chicago is the stat to remember. Luukkonen made 12 saves, so the Blackhawks scored 3 goals on about 15 shots while Buffalo threw 28 at Spencer Knight. The Sabres controlled the puck and still almost lost, because the few chances they allowed went in. Minnesota is a different kind of opponent. The Wild don't need many shots when 2 of their goals in one game came on the power play, and Buffalo can't give Kaprizov and Hughes easy looks with the man advantage.

Minnesota also has a big hole on its blue line. Brock Faber had surgery to repair a fractured skull and has no timetable to return. Hughes has been carrying the defense, but a Sabres team with Dahlin, Thompson and a healthy Kulich can push the pace on a thinned Wild defense. Buffalo is also without Conor Timmins, Jack Rathbone and Jason Zucker. Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET at KeyBank Center. Both teams have off days before this game, so it should come down to whether the Wild's special teams beat Buffalo's edge in 5-on-5 play.
