49ers keep stacking depth with journeyman LB pickup

The 49ers are never done tinkering with their front seven, and the latest addition is a name only diehards will recognize. San Francisco is signing linebacker Quinton Bell to a one-year contract, according to Adam Schefter, adding a journeyman with just enough NFL mileage to be a credible camp body.

Bell isn't walking into the building as a stranger to grinding for a roster spot. A seventh-round pick by the Raiders back in 2019 out of Prairie View A&M (No. 230 overall), he's bounced through Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Miami without ever really locking down a starting job. In four NFL seasons he's logged 33 games with just 3 starts, 38 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed and 1 forced fumble — a resume that screams special teams and depth, not difference-maker.

There's one shiny line on the bio though: Bell was on Tampa Bay's Super Bowl LV championship roster in 2020, even if he spent that postseason parked on the practice squad. Most recently he was with the Dolphins in 2025, appearing in 7 games with 8 tackles and a fumble recovery before Miami cut him loose, clearing the runway for San Francisco to swoop in.

This wasn't a random flier, either. Bell reportedly worked out for the 49ers alongside a handful of other free agents, including defensive ends K.J. Henry and Titus Leo and fellow linebacker Victor Dimukeje, and San Francisco liked what it saw enough to also bring Henry aboard. That's classic Kyle Shanahan-era 49ers behavior — kick the tires on a group of vets in camp, keep the ones who fit, and let the rest walk.

None of this moves the needle on Super Bowl odds, but it's the unglamorous work that decides who's active on gameday when injuries pile up in October. San Francisco's front seven took hits last year, and adding a versatile vet who's logged real NFL snaps is cheap insurance. Bell's path to meaningful reps runs through special teams and a strong camp, but for a guy who's already got a ring, one more shot at a roster spot is one more shot worth taking.
