Aaron Boone returns for 10th season as Yankees manager

TLDR: Aaron Boone will be back in the Yankees dugout for a 10th season in 2027, the final year of his contract, days after Tampa Bay swept New York out of the ALDS.
If you were waiting for the Yankees to fire someone after another October faceplant, keep waiting. The first report hit Monday night.
Pete Caldera of USA Today had it first, and it didn't stay a single-source report for long. Within about 10 minutes, Bryan Hoch, who covers the Yankees for MLB.com, confirmed it and added the detail that matters most: Boone's contract runs through 2027.
Can confirm that Aaron Boone will return for a 10th season as Yankees manager. His current contract runs through 2027. @pcaldera was on it.
That contract is the 2-year extension the Yankees gave Boone in February 2025, right after the 2024 World Series run. At the time the point was to keep him from managing as a lame duck. Fast forward 2 seasons and that's exactly where he's headed: 2027 is the last guaranteed year, reportedly at $5.5 million, so every losing streak next summer turns into a referendum on his job.
Plenty of Yankees fans figured this October would be the end of him. New York won 90 games and finished 2nd in the AL East for a 2nd straight year. The Yankees got past the Red Sox in the Wild Card round as the 4 seed, then the top-seeded Rays swept them in the ALDS. The lineup hit.130 in that series, and outside of Ben Rice it drove in just 3 runs. Aaron Judge wasn't available, and Giancarlo Stanton was limited to pinch-hitting.
Boone's October résumé is the case for the prosecution. Over 9 seasons he's 27-30 in the playoffs, with 3 ALCS trips and 1 pennant, and that pennant ended with a World Series loss to the Dodgers in 2024. The split that sums it up: 18-5 when his team is the higher seed, 9-25 when it isn't. He beats the teams he's supposed to beat and loses to the ones that are better.
This decision also tells you how Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman see it. The roster gets reshaped this winter, and the manager doesn't. Whether you call that loyalty or inertia, it means the 2027 Yankees will be judged on the moves the front office makes. If those moves don't work, a manager in the final year of his deal is the easiest guy in the building to replace.
So here's what to watch: whether anyone talks about an extension (don't count on it), who gets added around Judge, and how short Boone's leash is once the season starts. Season 10 is happening. Nobody's promised him a season 11.
