Aaron Donald has been out of football since he announced his retirement in March 2024, but the door has never really shut. This week Sean McVay put fresh eyes on the situation, confirming that Donald is actively weighing whether to come out of retirement and suit back up for the Rams.

The key line from McVay: no "invisible deadline." That matters because Donald isn't some fringe roster hopeful weighing a camp invite — he's a 3-time Defensive Player of the Year and the best interior pass rusher of his generation, and McVay clearly isn't willing to pressure him into a rushed decision just to satisfy a training camp timeline.

Still, McVay wants an answer. In a longer breakdown of the situation, he made clear the Rams have already sketched out target dates internally, even if nothing is being forced. "He's put himself in a position to be able to say yes or no," McVay said. "I think he's earned that right to have clarity on that. We're not at that point quite yet."

There's real money and real logistics tied up in this. Donald retired with a season and roughly $31 million still remaining on the 3-year, $95 million extension he signed back in 2022, an obligation that reverts to the Rams' books the moment he's reinstated — almost certainly forcing a renegotiated deal before he ever takes a snap. On the football side, the plan reportedly mirrors how the Rams handled his old-school holdouts: give him a few weeks of practice reps, then work him in for something like 30 to 40 snaps whenever Week 1 rolls around against the 49ers.

None of that works, though, until Donald actually says the word. He's reportedly taking his time evaluating how his body responds to a return-style training regimen before committing to anything, which is smart given how physically demanding the position is and how far removed he is from live football. McVay's patience is notable for a coach staring down a season that could badly use his best defender back in the middle of that line — but for now, this remains Donald's decision to make on his own clock.
