Aaron Donald retired in March 2024 after 10 seasons, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and a Super Bowl ring, walking away as arguably the best interior defensive lineman the league has ever seen. Donald himself has been blunt that pride is the deciding factor here, not nostalgia.

That standard talk lines up with what's reportedly happening behind the scenes — Donald flying in his own speed trainer from Pittsburgh to LA as he works through this decision, treating it less like a farewell tour and more like actual prep. If he's serious enough to bring in outside help and put pads on in August, this isn't a publicity stunt or a one-off workout for old time's sake.

Nothing is finalized, and McVay's comments make clear the Rams aren't rushing him. But between the formal tryout, the equipment usage that triggered an NFL report, and a training regimen that's ramping up rather than winding down, the pieces are lining up toward Donald actually coming back — even if the front office isn't ready to say it out loud yet.
