Training camp roster churn doesn't usually make for gripping football theater, but the Bills gave beat writers something to chew on this week. Buffalo brought in a trio of veteran receivers for tryouts, and by the next day one of them had a contract.
Buffalo tried out veteran WRs KhaDarel Hodge, Dante Pettis and Isaiah Whitehead.
Pettis, 30, is an 8-year vet who's bounced through 4 organizations since the 49ers drafted him in the 2nd round back in 2018. He's never been a true difference-maker as a receiver, career numbers are 92 catches for 1,231 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his most recent stint with the Saints leaned heavily on special teams work. That's the actual selling point here: Buffalo's punt return job is up for grabs, and a guy with real return juice suddenly has a runway to make the roster on that alone.
The move that made Pettis's path clearer came on the other end of the transaction. Jalen Virgil, who'd been fighting for a spot in that same receiver competition, got waived with a non-football injury designation.
Bills signed veteran WR Dante Pettis and WR Jalen Virgil has been waived/NFI.
Virgil reportedly spent extended time with trainers during Wednesday's practice dealing with a hamstring issue, which lines up with the NFI tag. Practically, that means if he clears waivers he reverts to Buffalo's list rather than hitting the open market outright, and the sides could still work out an injury settlement down the line. It's not necessarily the end of the road for him in Buffalo, but it's a clean removal from the numbers game at receiver right as the roster starts to take real shape.
None of this is earth-shattering, but it's a snapshot of how training camp actually works: teams host tryouts, find a fit, and clear a body to make room. For Pettis, it's a shot at redemption and a real roster spot off the strength of his legs, not his hands. For Virgil, it's a setback that could still have a second chapter depending on how the settlement shakes out. Worth watching who else Buffalo circles back to from that same workout group as roster cuts approach.
