Daz Cameron's name means something if you're old enough to remember the Justin Verlander blockbuster. Back in 2017, the Astros shipped Cameron, Franklin Perez and Jake Rogers to Detroit to get Verlander for their World Series run. Cameron was the centerpiece outfield prospect in that deal, a former first-rounder with a famous last name (his dad Mike Cameron played 17 MLB seasons). Almost a decade later, he's bouncing between organizations trying to hang on to a big league dream.
Now he's a Blue Jay, sort of. MLB Trade Rumors confirmed Toronto signed the 29-year-old to a minor league deal, giving the org another outfield body as it heads toward the trade deadline.

The path here is a little wild. Cameron spent last offseason overseas, signing with the KBO's Doosan Bears, and actually held his own — reportedly hitting .287 with 9 homers and 43 RBIs in 75 games before Doosan released him in late June. That's a solid line for a guy trying to prove he still has something left, and it clearly caught Toronto's attention.
His MLB track record is rougher. Across stints with the Tigers, A's and Brewers from 2020-25, Cameron has hit just .200/.258/.326 in 160 career games — a résumé that reads more org depth than everyday outfielder at this point. He's since been assigned to Toronto's Florida Complex League club to get his feet back under him stateside.
None of this moves the needle for the big league roster today, but that's the point of a July minor league signing. Contenders stockpile outfield depth in case of injury or a September need, and a reclamation project with pop and a name recognizable to anyone who watched the Verlander trade is a cheap flier. Worst case, he's organizational filler in Dunedin. Best case, Toronto found a useful bat for basically nothing while everyone else is focused on the actual trade deadline.
