Saints' camp nightmare: Bryan Bresee's second torn ACL

Training camp is supposed to be the fun part. No pads-crunching hits, no live tackling, just guys getting their legs back under them before the real hitting starts. Then Bryan Bresee's knee buckled on a noncontact play and the Saints' whole defensive line outlook changed in an instant.

Ian Rapoport was first to report the news, and it's the kind of update that lands like a gut punch no matter how it's delivered. Bresee is 24 years old, was the Saints' first-round pick back in 2023, and has quietly become a fixture up front — 26 career starts and 14.5 sacks worth of proof that he was supposed to be the guy anchoring New Orleans' interior for years to come.

Head coach Kellen Moore described it as about as freaky as these things get, saying nobody collided with him and nobody fell on him — it was just a goofy, unlucky moment on an otherwise routine practice rep. That's the cruel part about noncontact ACL injuries: there's no big hit to point to, no moment anyone could've prevented. The knee just goes.

This isn't new territory for Bresee, either. He tore his left ACL back in 2021 during his time at Clemson, so if this diagnosis is confirmed, it'll be the second major knee tear of his career — a brutal twist for a guy who'd already fought his way back once and was finally settling into a long-term role.

The timing stings on the money side too. The Saints had already activated Bresee's 2027 fifth-year option, a deal worth $13.9 million, betting on him as a foundational piece of the defensive front. Now that bet is on hold for at least a year while he goes through another rehab grind.

For the Saints, the immediate fallout is about the two-deep. Moore made clear the team will need other interior linemen to step up and grab reps that were earmarked for Bresee, which means camp battles up front just got a lot more consequential for whoever's fighting for a roster spot behind him.
