Champ Kelly trades NFL war rooms for Tiger and Rory's flag football bet

Champ Kelly just made one of the stranger career pivots in recent NFL front-office history. According to Adam Schefter, Kelly is leaving traditional team-building behind to become senior vice president of operations at TMRW Sports, running point on the new professional flag football league the company is launching with the NFL.

Kelly's resume is straight scouting-department pedigree. He spent 7 seasons with the Chicago Bears working his way up through pro scouting and personnel before the Raiders brought him in as assistant GM in 2022, a job that turned into interim GM duties for the back half of the 2023 season after Dave Ziegler got fired. Vegas ultimately went with Tom Telesco instead of promoting Kelly, and he stuck around another year before jumping to Miami as a senior personnel executive in 2025. When the Dolphins parted with GM Chris Grier, Kelly again stepped into the interim GM chair before the front office ultimately moved on without giving him the permanent title either time.

So instead of waiting around for a third crack at a full-time GM job, Kelly is jumping into something that doesn't have 32 years of institutional inertia baked in. TMRW Sports is the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy-backed outfit behind TGL, the tech-heavy indoor golf league, and back in March the company announced its NFL partnership to build a professional flag football league for men and women, reportedly timed to build momentum ahead of the 2028 LA Olympics, where flag football will be a medal sport. The investor pool is stacked, too — Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Serena Williams, Billie Jean King and Joe Montana are among the names on the cap table.

That's the real story here: an actual NFL scouting and roster-building mind is now in the room shaping a brand-new league's operations from the ground floor, rather than inheriting someone else's roster or someone else's cap situation. Kelly joins Brendan Donohue, who was recently named president of the flag football league, as TMRW starts filling out its front office ahead of launch.

For Kelly personally, it's a bet that building something new beats chasing a GM title that keeps slipping away in Miami and Vegas. For the NFL and TMRW, landing a two-time interim GM with nearly two decades of personnel experience is a signal they're serious about treating this flag football venture like a real professional league, not a gimmick. Whether it becomes appointment viewing by 2028 is anyone's guess, but they just hired someone who knows how to build a football operation from scratch.
