Chasing Goals over dies as Golden Knights beat Penguins

TLDR: Barstool's Chasing Goals crew sweated a goals over from the PPG Paints Arena stands, but Vegas edged Pittsburgh 3-2 and 5 total goals left the ticket short.

The night started the way every Chasing Goals stop does: on the sidewalk outside the arena, with a sheet of paper and a DraftKings promo code.

The pregame graphic said over 6.5. Later in the night the gambling account was calling it over 7.5. Either way the math needed a track meet, and Penguins vs. Golden Knights didn't turn into one. Tomas Hertl put Vegas up 1-0 on a power play at 16:36 of the 1st, and then nobody scored for the whole 2nd period. At the second intermission it was 1-0, which left the crew at the bottom of a very deep hole.

Need 6 in the third

That's gallows humor, and the numbers back it up: 1-0 after 40 minutes, with an over 6.5 that needs 7 goals, means you need 6 in the 3rd period. Then the 3rd actually tried. Tommy Novak tied it for Pittsburgh 1:09 in, and the building finally had something to stand up for.

TWO GOALS DOWN The Chasing Goals Crew is still alive @DKSports #DKpartner

A very slow start, in Barstool's own words, but it was alive. Rickard Rakell put the Penguins ahead 2-1 at 9:58. Trevor Connelly answered for Vegas at 11:19 to make it 2-2, which made 4 goals on the night with more than 8 minutes left and the over suddenly breathing.

MAKE IT 4 GOALS OVER 7.5 HAS LIFE IN PITTSBURGH @DKSports #DKpartner

That was as close as it got. Pittsburgh had late chances, including a 5-on-3 power play, and couldn't cash them. Hertl got his 2nd of the night on a Vegas power play with 32.8 seconds left to win it 3-2. That made 5 total goals. It came up short of 6.5 and short of 7.5, and the home team lost too.

Loser!! Pittsburgh very bad

The trash talk on the way out is the right read. Pittsburgh has now lost 3 straight and sits at 5-8-2, while Vegas moved to 10-5-2. For the tour, the lesson is that a 1-0 game through 2 periods kills a goals over no matter how loud the 3rd gets. Chasing Goals moves on to the next city, and the over 6.5 stays in Pittsburgh.
