Chiefs say goodbye to Arrowhead's cold with a $3B dome

Arrowhead has been home since 1972, one of the loudest, coldest, most brutal buildings in football. That era now has an expiration date. The Chiefs dropped the first renderings of their new stadium, and it's not a renovation — it's a full move across state lines into a fully enclosed dome.

The images show a symmetrical, curved building with a scalloped upper deck echoing Arrowhead's bowl, but with a translucent ETFE roof overhead instead of open Missouri sky. No more sub-zero December games with numb fingers and frozen tundra — the new building traps the noise and keeps everyone warm while still chasing that Arrowhead-level crowd roar the franchise built its identity on.

Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt framed it as both tribute and reinvention. "It honors the rich legacy of this franchise while setting a bold course for the future of Chiefs Kingdom," Hunt said, with the team working alongside design firm MANICA and architect of record HNTB on the project.

The bigger story here is geography. This isn't staying at the Arrowhead site in Jackson County, Missouri — the Chiefs are relocating roughly 25 miles west to Kansas City, Kansas, near Kansas Speedway and The Legends retail district, after Kansas lawmakers approved bonds covering the bulk of the $3 billion price tag. It's a genuine border-jump, ending decades of the Chiefs and Royals sharing the Truman Sports Complex on the Missouri side and setting off a fight over tax dollars, jobs and civic pride that's been simmering since the stadium vote passed.

None of this changes anything on the field this season, but it reshapes the next era of Chiefs Kingdom. Arrowhead gets a farewell tour that'll stretch across the next several years while the new dome rises in Kansas, and every Chiefs home game between now and 2031 doubles as a countdown to the last one ever played on that hallowed frozen turf.
