Christian McCaffrey's Tightness Absence Hits 8 Days, Sparks Season Fears

Christian McCaffrey has missed 8 straight practices with "tightness," and one injury analyst thinks the 49ers RB's season is already cooked before it starts.

Christian McCaffrey hasn't taken a practice rep with the 49ers in over a week, and the vague label attached to it is doing nothing to calm anybody down. SleeperNFL flagged the streak on Tuesday: 8 straight days without McCaffrey on the field for a team trying to get its best offensive weapon ramped up before the games start counting.

"Tightness" is the kind of word that sounds like nothing until it's attached to Christian McCaffrey specifically. This is a guy who played only 4 games in 2024, first sidelined by bilateral Achilles tendinitis that cost him the first 8 weeks of the season and eventually sent him to Germany to see a specialist, then done in by a PCL sprain in Week 13 that landed him on injured reserve for the rest of the year. An 8-day absence in August isn't a crisis on its own, but for McCaffrey it's a pattern people have seen play out badly before.

That history is exactly why David J. Chao, who posts injury analysis as ProFootballDoc, wasn't willing to wait and see. He looked at the same 8-day gap and went straight to the worst-case read.

Season seems over at this point

Kyle Shanahan, for his part, has downplayed the whole thing — he's said the absences themselves don't worry him, and that his actual fear is McCaffrey trying to push through the tightness and turning a minor issue into something that costs him a month. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has framed it as simple workload management, keeping McCaffrey's rep count in check the way the staff does every camp. SleeperNFL had some fun with the gap between the coach-speak and the growing internet panic.

Idk why everyone is so concerned about Christian McCaffrey’s health Kyle Shanahan said he wasn’t worried and he would never lie to us

The stakes here go beyond fantasy drafts. McCaffrey is the engine of Shanahan's offense when healthy, and San Francisco has already lived through what a season without him looks like. If this tightness lingers into the regular season the way last year's injuries snowballed, the 49ers are staring down a second straight year of trying to win without their best player — and this time nobody in the building can say they didn't see it coming.
