Brown, meanwhile, is a name Colts fans have seen before. He spent time with Indianapolis back in 2023 during a well-traveled career that's also included stops with the Raiders, Browns, Texans, Patriots, Seahawks and, most recently, the Cardinals in 2025. He's built his reputation as a physical, attached-Y blocking tight end rather than a pass-catching weapon, though his best statistical season came in New England in 2023, when he caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown.
The timing matters more than the name. Indianapolis' tight end room has become one of the better ones in the league behind rookie sensation Tyler Warren, who made the Pro Bowl in 2025, plus steady veteran blockers Mo Alie-Cox and Drew Ogletree, and depth piece Will Mallory. Brown isn't walking into a starting job — he's walking into a training camp battle for a practice squad or bottom-of-the-roster spot, competing against players who already have a leg up.
Still, there's logic in taking the flier. Brown's blocking pedigree fits a Colts offense that leans on physicality up front, and adding a proven veteran costs nothing when the alternative roster spot just opened up because of injury. It's the kind of transaction that barely moves the needle nationally but matters plenty inside the building as Indianapolis fine-tunes its depth chart before the games start counting.
Nothing about this move screams headline-grabbing upgrade, and it isn't supposed to. It's roster management — replace an injured body with a healthy one who's played the position at a high level before. Whether Brown sticks past the roster cuts will say more about the Colts' depth chart than about him.
