Cristopher Sanchez Gets the Ball at Home for the All-Star Game

The Phillies ace will start the All-Star Game on his own mound, a stage usually reserved for the best pitcher alive.

Jon Heyman dropped the news Sunday afternoon: Cristopher Sanchez is starting for the National League in Tuesday's All-Star Game, and he's doing it at Citizens Bank Park. That's not just a nice honor, that's the honor. Starting the Midsummer Classic in your own building, in front of your own fans, is about as good as it gets for a pitcher.

Breaking: Phillies superstar pitcher Cristopher Sanchez will be the National League starting pitcher for Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Philadelphia

Context matters here. Sanchez isn't some feel-good compromise pick because the game happens to be in Philly. The lefty has been arguably the best pitcher in baseball this year, sitting at 10-4 with a 2.62 ERA and 137 strikeouts through mid-July. Earlier this season he ripped off a 50 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak, the fifth-longest in MLB history and the longest ever by a left-hander. This is his second straight All-Star nod after making it in 2024, but this one comes with the ball in his hand on Opening Day of the second half.

The Phillies made sure he wasn't going anywhere either. Back in March, Philadelphia locked Sanchez up on a 6-year, $107 million extension, betting on him as the long-term face of the rotation rather than a trade chip or a pending free agent. Tuesday's start is basically the receipt on that bet showing up early.

There's history riding on this too. If Sanchez takes the mound Tuesday, he'd be the first Dominican-born pitcher to start an All-Star Game since Johnny Cueto in 2016, and the first pitcher to start the game in his own home ballpark since Clayton Kershaw did it for the Dodgers in 2022. That's rarefied company for a guy who was a fringe prospect not too long ago.

For a Phillies fanbase that's watched this team knock on the door in October the last few years without breaking through, having their ace headline the All-Star Game at home is a nice midseason flex. It also stacks up as a marquee moment for prop bettors and futures markets, with Sanchez now the face of Tuesday's broadcast and a live storyline heading into the stretch run.

Watch for how deep he goes Tuesday and whether the home crowd gets loud enough to rattle an All-Star lineup that's used to hostile road environments, not a building full of people rooting for their own guy to dominate.
