Florida State pays Parker Executive Search $175,000

TLDR: Florida State is paying Parker Executive Search $175,000 to find its next athletic director and Mike Norvell's replacement, and the contracts put the AD hire on a 30-day clock.
Contracts obtained by Noles247 show the price tag and the plan for the 2 biggest hires in Tallahassee.

NEWS: Florida State is paying Parker Executive Search $175,000 in fees to run its AD and head coach searches, per contracts obtained by @Noles247. Parker’s proposed timeline for the AD search is 30 days. Details: t.co/PsGC1J4XnS
The split is $100,000 for the AD search and $75,000 for the head coach search, and that's just the fee. FSU also covers Parker's expenses, which the firm estimates at no more than 10% of each fee. The money goes out in 3 equal payments: when the search starts, at day 30 and at day 60. Kyle Clark, FSU's vice president for finance and administration, signed both deals. The AD contract is dated October 30, the same day as the Board of Trustees meeting. The coaching contract is dated November 2, right as Norvell was getting fired.
FSU is in this spot because it fired its AD and its coach within about 7 weeks. Michael Alford was dismissed as athletic director on September 14, and Bruce Warwick has been the interim AD since. Then Norvell went after a home loss to Clemson. He finishes 41-39 in 6-plus seasons, 10-22 since the start of 2024 and 3-5 this year. Florida State is reportedly eating a buyout of around $47-50 million to get him out. Former Middle Tennessee coach and ex-FSU quarterback Rick Stockstill is running the team on an interim basis.
The AD timeline is the part that matters, because it's laid out day by day, which isn't how these contracts usually read.
Here's how it goes. On day 18, Parker hands over 8-10 recommended candidates. On days 22-23, a committee runs first-round Zoom interviews. On days 28-29, 3-4 finalists come to campus. On day 30, president Richard McCullough announces the hire. The coaching contract has no schedule like that at all. So in theory the new AD gets named in time to have a say in who replaces Norvell. That's how it should work, and it's also not guaranteed in a sport where the coaching carousel won't wait for anyone.
Daniel Parker runs the sports practice at the Atlanta firm, which says he has led more than 200 searches for athletic directors, head coaches and conference commissioners. The contracts protect FSU a bit too. If either hire resigns or gets fired within 18 months, Parker runs a replacement search for free. And after the first 90 days, FSU can end either search with 30 days' notice and pay no penalty.
For a school that just took on a buyout close to $50 million, $175,000 is pocket change. The 30-day AD clock is the thing to watch. If FSU hits it, the new AD walks into the coaching search with Parker's candidate list already started. If it slips, McCullough is the one picking the next Seminoles coach, and he has already called this "a big business decision."
