Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams to sit Rockets back-to-backs

TLDR: Ime Udoka says Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams will sit out back-to-backs to start the season, with Marcus Smart starting at point guard on the nights VanVleet rests.

Udoka announced it Tuesday, a few days before the Rockets tip off. The plan is about as simple as they come.

Nobody should be surprised. VanVleet tore his right ACL and meniscus in a preseason workout last September and missed all of 2025-26. Adams had season-ending surgery on his left ankle in January after a Grade 3 sprain. Houston waited a whole year to get its starting point guard and its enforcer back on the floor. It is not going to burn them out by November on the second night of a back-to-back.

There is a schedule angle too, and it shows up fast. The first back-to-back begins Friday against the Spurs, so the Smart-at-point-guard plan could get its first run within days of opening night. Udoka did not say whether the rest plan holds all season or only early on. For now, if you're playing DFS or betting props, check the schedule before you lock anything in. Smart's minutes and usage jump on VanVleet's off nights, and anyone tied to Adams in the frontcourt rotation moves with him.

The other half of the guard puzzle is Reed Sheppard. Udoka spelled out his role on the same day, and it's clear the Rockets want him as the guy who changes the game off the bench.

The Malik Monk comparison is the interesting part. Monk built his career in Sacramento as an instant-offense guard off the bench, and Udoka saying the Rockets will try to get Sheppard and Bogdan a certain number of points and shots each night means the bench shots are by design, not leftovers. Sheppard showed what he could do in the preseason. He got a spot start against Dallas and put up 17 points in 25 minutes before moving back to the bench.

Put it together and you get a rotation that will change from night to night early on. When everyone is healthy and rested, VanVleet runs the offense, Smart defends and Sheppard comes in to shoot. On the second night of a back-to-back, Smart starts, Sheppard gets more of the ball and the frontcourt goes on without Adams. That is a deep team taking care of 2 veterans coming off major injuries, and it is a pretty good problem to have.

What to watch: how VanVleet and Adams hold up over the first couple of weeks, and whether Udoka keeps the back-to-back rule going or eases off once they prove healthy. Also keep an eye on Friday's Spurs game for the first look at whatever the Rockets do on the second night.
