Garrett Wilson lands in concussion protocol for Jets

TLDR: Aaron Glenn says Garrett Wilson is in the concussion protocol, putting the Jets' best receiver in doubt just as Breece Hall and rookie David Bailey look close to coming back.

Glenn gave the update at his Wednesday presser, and the Jets beat writers had it out within a minute.

That's the one Jets fans didn't want. Wilson is the whole passing game. Take him off the field and the receiver room goes from thin to nearly empty. Glenn gave no timeline, and with a concussion you don't get one. Wilson has to clear every step of the league's return-to-play protocol before he's back, and that can take a few days or a few weeks. Nobody knows until he passes the tests.

In the same presser, Glenn had better news on the backfield.

Breece Hall is "trending in the right direction," Glenn says.

Hall has missed 5 straight games with a quad injury and hasn't played since Week 3 against the Lions. He's been practicing on a limited basis and was in line to return in Week 9 against the Chiefs. Braelon Allen played well while Hall was out, but offensive coordinator Frank Reich isn't pretending there's a debate: "Breece is our guy. I'm assuming Breece is our guy," he said Tuesday. If Wilson can't go, the Jets need Hall carrying the offense, as a runner and as a receiver out of the backfield.

Rapoport summed it up as good news and bad news.

Bad news here. On the other hand, Breece Hall and David Bailey could return.

Bailey is the other good news. The No. 2 overall pick leads the team with 5.5 sacks, and he sat out against the Raiders with a groin injury he picked up in the 28-25 loss to Miami. Before he got hurt, he joined Brian Urlacher as the only players since 2000 with at least 5.5 sacks and 35 tackles in their first 7 NFL games. Getting him back helps a pass rush that has also been playing without T'Vondre Sweat and Joseph Ossai.

So it's a trade-off in the injury report: probably 2 key players back, and the best one on offense out for now. What matters is how Wilson does in the protocol the rest of this week. If he isn't cleared, the Jets go into a game against Kansas City with a returning running back and not much at receiver, and Hall has to be the guy right away.
