Bieber, Blockbusters, and a Kid From the Cayman Islands

The 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo had everything: a pop star on the mic, a draft floor being run by a random guy named Joe Dirt, and a first-round pick…

Nobody does surreal quite like the NHL Draft, and Buffalo delivered on Friday night. Gavin McKenna went 1st overall to the Toronto Maple Leafs — that part was expected. What nobody had on their bingo card was Justin Bieber walking up to the podium in a red track jacket to make the announcement. A Canadian hockey phenom getting called by Canada's most famous pop star in front of the entire hockey world. The moment was legitimately wild.

McKenna's family celebrating on the floor, then McKenna himself shaking hands with Gary Bettman on stage — all announced by Justin Bieber.

McKenna had been the consensus top prospect for months, so the pick itself wasn't a shock. But the Bieber element turned a routine first overall call into a genuine cultural moment. Chicks in the Office clocked it immediately, and honestly, if you weren't at least a little entertained by that scene you might be dead inside.

While the Bieber moment grabbed the headlines, the actual hockey stuff was equally chaotic. Ryan Whitney was basically live-blogging the trade action in real time — Viggo Bjorck to Winnipeg, Dorofyev off to the Rangers, the Sharks loading up Verhoeff and Stenberg, Hellebuyck rumors swirling, Werenski's name floating around. The 2026 draft became a full-blown NHL reshuffling event in the span of a couple hours. Whitney's verdict on San Jose: they're going to be an absolute wagon. Given how many picks and pieces they've been stockpiling, it's hard to argue.

San Jose is going to be an absolute wagon soon

Then there was the draft floor itself, which apparently had its own subplot. FrankieBorrelli was alarmed to report that Barstool's Schaef was getting completely dominated on the floor by some unidentified character the internet immediately dubbed 'Joe Dirt.' Whoever Joe Dirt is, he was running the scene. Sometimes the real story isn't on the stage. And speaking of unexpected stories — Jaxon Cover. The kid grew up playing roller hockey in the Cayman Islands. Not ice. Roller hockey. In the Caribbean. And on Friday night he heard his name called in the first round of the NHL Draft. There's a throwback clip of him as a 17-year-old throwing moves around an indoor roller rink, and then suddenly he's a first-round pick. Hockey finds people in the strangest places.

McKenna to Toronto, Bieber at the mic, trades flying, Joe Dirt running the floor, and a Cayman Islands roller hockey kid going in the first round. The NHL Draft does not miss.
