Melifonwu isn't a household name, but he's got real snaps under his belt. Detroit took him in the 3rd round back in 2021, and he spent 4 seasons there before hitting free agency and signing with Miami in March of 2025. Between the 2 stops he's played in 53 games with 22 starts, picking off 3 passes, defensing 14 more, and even chipping in 5.5 sacks from the back end.
Last season was actually his best as a pro. Melifonwu logged a career-high 53 tackles for the Dolphins across 16 games with 8 starts, adding an interception and a sack. That's a guy who was starting for an AFC team a few months ago, now walking into a Tampa Bay camp as an add-on.
So why now? The Bucs reportedly waived rookie safety Ja'Qurious Conley to make room, and the move comes right as Vita Vea went down with an injury during conditioning tests on the first day of camp. Suddenly a safety room that looked settled needed a body, and Melifonwu happens to have ties to the Tampa area, which made him an easy yes.
None of this screams marquee addition, but that's kind of the point of training camp churn. Teams don't sign 1-year vets like this to make headlines, they sign them because injuries and roster math never stop for anybody, even a contender. For the Bucs, it's a low-cost, low-risk way to keep the safety group at full strength heading into the preseason grind.
