Jadeveon Clowney returns to Texans, chasing a ring

Eight years after the Texans traded away the No. 1 overall pick who once terrorized backfields in a Houston uniform, Clowney is putting the jersey back on. The move first broke as a report before the team made it official, and Adam Schefter had the confirmation once the ink dried.

The full-circle nature of this is hard to overstate. Clowney was Houston's franchise cornerstone the moment they drafted him first overall back in 2014, and he spent his first four NFL seasons there before a trade sent him to Seattle in 2019. Now, per Schefter's follow-up reporting, he's walking back into the building where it all started.

According to reporting from Aaron Wilson, Clowney signed a one-year deal that tops out around $8 million with incentives, well short of what a productive pass rusher could've fetched on the open market. He explained the choice himself, and it wasn't complicated.

At 33, Clowney is coming off an 8.5-sack season split with Dallas, his best output since 2023, so this isn't a nostalgia signing for a guy with nothing left. He's still producing, and now he's stacking that production next to a defensive front that already includes Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, a trio that combined for over 35 sacks last season. Fans immediately started running the math on how scary that group could be.

For a Texans team trying to build a real contender around a young, ascending roster, adding a proven veteran edge rusher who's explicitly chasing a championship instead of a bigger check is about as low-risk, high-reward as free agency signings get. Clowney's earned enough in his career that this late-stage decision reads as him picking the roster, not the number, and Houston's defensive front just got a lot scarier for it.
