Vikings bet on Jamal Adams' return to safety

Word broke Monday night that Jamal Adams was heading to Minnesota, and by Tuesday morning it was locked up. The Vikings have officially signed the three-time Pro Bowler and 2019 first-team All-Pro, giving Brian Flores another chess piece for a defense that's built its whole identity around versatile, downhill players.

That linebacker experiment is the real backstory here. Adams spent most of his career as one of the league's most feared strong safeties before the Raiders moved him off the ball last season. The results were underwhelming — 45 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, a sack, 2 QB hits and a forced fumble across 17 games, but only 4 starts, per multiple reports. Not exactly the numbers of a guy who was a top-5 defender in football just a few years earlier.

Minnesota is reportedly bringing him back closer to his roots, and Flores has a track record of getting the most out of hybrid safety/linebacker types who can blitz, cover and hit. That's the appeal for Adams too — a chance to reset his career in a scheme that actually knows what to do with a player like him.

Contract terms haven't come out publicly, and it's worth remembering Adams turns 30 this year and hasn't played like an All-Pro since his Jets/Seahawks peak. This isn't a splashy, resume-defining move for Minnesota — it's a low-cost, high-ceiling flier on a name that still means something in a defensive room.

For a Vikings defense that's leaned hard into Flores' aggressive, disguised-pressure identity, adding a former All-Pro who's still just a year removed from switching positions is a low-risk swing. If it clicks, Minnesota gets a versatile piece it didn't have to overpay for. If it doesn't, they've lost nothing but a training camp roster spot.
