James Pearce Jr. suspended 8 games, Falcons down a pass rusher

Atlanta's pass rush just took a massive hit before Week 1 even kicks off. Adam Schefter reported Friday that Falcons defensive end James Pearce Jr. is being suspended 8 regular-season games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, stemming from his arrest in February in Doral, Florida, after a domestic dispute involving his ex-girlfriend, Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson.

The suspension is final. Per ESPN, Pearce did not appeal, and the ban runs from August 30 through his eligible reinstatement date of November 2 — basically half the season gone before he ever suits up. Pearce, 22, was originally charged with three felony counts, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and fleeing and eluding police, along with a misdemeanor stalking charge. He agreed to a 6-month pretrial intervention program back in April that could ultimately see the charges dropped if he completes it.

This is a rough turn for a guy Atlanta went out of its way to get. The Falcons traded up with the Rams in the 2025 draft to grab Pearce at No. 26 overall out of Tennessee, where he was a two-time first-team All-SEC edge rusher with 19.5 sacks over three seasons. He was supposed to be part of the young core reshaping Atlanta's defensive front. Instead, he'll be watching the first 2 months of his sophomore campaign from the sideline.

Not everyone thinks the punishment fits what actually happened. Hayden Winks laid out the disconnect bluntly, pointing out that Pearce is facing no jail time, 12 months of therapy and 5 apology letters — on top of the 8 missed games — for an incident where his ex allegedly had to ram his car with hers just to get away and call police.

For a Falcons team trying to build a real pass rush around Jalon Walker and its other 2025 additions, losing Pearce for half the year is a real football problem on top of the off-field mess. Atlanta will have to lean on its depth up front to start the season, with Pearce not eligible to return until Atlanta is already 8 games deep into 2026.
