Patriots signed RB JaMycal Hasty and placed RB Terrell Jennings on injured reserve.

This isn't Hasty's first rodeo in Foxborough. The 29-year-old has bounced in and out of New England's building since 2023, including a training camp stint in 2025, and he actually saw real run last season — 20 carries for 69 yards and 10 catches for 59 yards and a touchdown across 15 games in 2024. He's a low-ceiling, high-utility depth piece, exactly the kind of guy a team scrambles to bring back when a roster spot suddenly opens up.

Jennings, meanwhile, was reportedly the favorite to lock down the third running back job after working his way back from a stint on the non-football injury list. That plan is now on hold. Landing on IR just hours before the preseason opener against the Colts is a rough break for a guy who looked like he'd finally earned a real shot at a roster spot.

For New England, it's a simple math problem: a body left the room, so a body had to come in. Hasty knows the offense, knows the building, and doesn't need a crash course to be useful in camp reps and preseason snaps. It's not a flashy move, but rosters get built on exactly this kind of transaction in mid-August.

The bigger question is what it means for Jennings' longer-term outlook with the team, and whether Hasty's return is a camp-arm rental or a sign he's carved out a real path to the 53-man roster. Either way, the Patriots' backfield picture just got a little more crowded, and a little more unsettled, right before the games start to count for something.
