Jayden Daniels' attorney sent LSU a cease-and-desist letter on August 5, telling the school it can no longer use his name, image, or likeness after cornerback DJ Pickett started wearing his old No. 5. The letter argues LSU's contractual NIL rights, plus a 180-day grace period after his last college game, expired long ago.
That number carries weight. Daniels wore No. 5 through his Heisman-winning 2023 season, throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns before Washington took him No. 2 overall in the 2024 draft. Coach Lane Kiffin has said Pickett, LSU's No. 2 cornerback recruit in the 2025 class, was promised No. 5 at signing back in December 2024, while former coach Brian Kelly says he held off issuing it specifically because Daniels never signed off.
Barstool's Will Compton wasn't in a sentimental mood about it, firing off a pointed question about Daniels' résumé at LSU.
Eric Nathan took a more measured shot, but landed on a similar place. He doesn't think Daniels personally picked this fight over the jersey itself — he thinks it's the lawyers running the play, and he's not thrilled that off-field stuff like this is eating the oxygen ahead of the season.
I don’t think Jayden went out of his way to demand anything from LSU relating to his number. It’s a money thing that his lawyers/team are doing and it’s obviously lame as hell and I wish we could focus on Super Bowls and not this off the field nonsense
Nathan's read tracks with the actual legal letter, which isn't really about Pickett wearing the number so much as it's about LSU still commercializing Daniels' NIL without a deal in place. Once that distinction got pointed out to him, Nathan softened up a bit — if this is just Daniels' camp saying stop making money off me, not you can never let anyone wear No. 5, that's a much easier argument to live with.
Ok fair enough then. The "nobody else can wear number 5" was basically 99% of everyone's issue. If it's as simple as "I don't fuck with you guys anymore so you can't make money off me now", whatever, that's fine.
Where this goes next is on LSU. The school hasn't retired No. 5, and Kiffin's stance so far has been that a promise to a recruit is a promise, regardless of how a Heisman winner feels about it years later. Expect this to stay a background story through Daniels' second Washington season unless LSU either walks back the jersey assignment or the two sides quietly settle the NIL claim.
