Jayson Tatum bloodied in collision, returns vs. Magic

TLDR: Jayson Tatum went to the locker room bleeding from the head after he collided with Orlando's Jamal Cain late in the 1st quarter Sunday, then came back to finish out the night.
Late in the 1st quarter, Tatum and Cain went up in the same space and knocked heads. Tatum came out of it bleeding and went straight to the back.

For about a quarter, every Celtics fan was holding their breath. Any time Tatum heads to the tunnel early, Boston goes straight back to May 12, 2025, when he tore his Achilles in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. He had surgery within 24 hours and spent about 10 months rehabbing before he got back on the floor in March 2026. When your franchise guy has already lost most of a year, blood on the floor is not something you shrug off.
Good news: this one looks like a cut, not a crisis. The Boston Globe's Gary Washburn reported that Tatum returned to the game after getting treated in the locker room. Bleeding head wounds look awful on TV and usually need some gauze, a few minutes and maybe a wrap, and that seems to be all this was. Still, a head collision means the training staff will watch him closely for the rest of the game and after it.
The timing would've stung, too. On Tuesday Tatum hit a pull-up jumper at the buzzer in overtime to beat the Nets 125-124. He finished with 40 points and played 42 minutes in his 1st back-to-back since the Achilles. He came into Sunday averaging 24 a game and has been saying out loud that he's chasing his old top-10 level. He called the comeback a best-case scenario and admitted that after something that traumatic, "you're never going to be the same person."
So the short version: scary clip, Tatum walked back out. What to watch next is how he's listed on the injury report going into Boston's next game, and whether any head-injury evaluation comes up overnight. If he's on that list as anything more than a cut, then it's a story. For now he's bloodied, back on the court, and still the guy carrying this Celtics team.
