Paolo Banchero out a month-plus as Magic visit Raptors

TLDR: Paolo Banchero's right high ankle sprain looks set to sideline him for at least a month, leaving Franz Wagner and a struggling Magic team to find answers in Toronto in the NBA Cup.
The injury came in only the second game of the season, against Minnesota, and the timeline has now firmed up into the one nobody in Orlando wanted.

The #Magic will be without Paolo Banchero for at least a month, it appears. It is another stroke of bad luck: t.co/8rgs03RHIb
It's a low-grade high ankle sprain, the kind that usually costs 4 to 6 weeks. Banchero told reporters he expects to miss at least a month, and that "4 weeks" is the floor if treatment and rehab go well. He also made clear he isn't going to rush it, because he doesn't want it to linger. Smart, because high ankle sprains love to come back if you test them early, and a month works out to roughly 15 games.
The worst part is how familiar this is. In 2024-25, Banchero tore his right oblique 5 games into the season and missed more than 30 games. Last season a left groin strain shut him down 12 games in and cost him 10 more. Now it's the ankle, 2 games in. He said he was 'pissed off' and called it a freak accident he had no way to prevent. Fair enough, but 3 straight seasons of losing the franchise guy in the first few weeks is starting to look like a curse.
He'd also started the year on fire. In the opener against Atlanta, Banchero put up 35 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds, and the Magic still lost. That's what makes the start so worrying. Even with Paolo playing like that, Orlando wasn't winning, and the people who watch this team every night are saying it out loud.

I am typically the optimist, but there are signs of concern four games into the season for the #Magic: 🎙️ t.co/vlTQGPW7BY 📺 t.co/rQHYJupczi
When the guy who's usually the optimist says there are signs of concern 4 games in, take it seriously. Without Banchero, more of the offense falls on Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane, and the margin for sloppy basketball is gone. Wagner seems to know it. At shootaround in Toronto before the NBA Cup game, he pointed to the problems Orlando has to fix right now.

#Magic forward Franz Wagner pointed towards transition defense, ball control and more intense execution as areas Orlando wants to clean up tonight at Toronto. Asked if the NBA Cup changes the intensity at all: “It shouldn’t but we’ve got to play more intense anyway,” he said.
Transition defense, ball control, more intensity. That's not a scheme problem, that's a team giving away easy points and coughing it up. Wagner's line about the Cup is the honest one: the tournament stakes shouldn't change the effort, but the effort needs to go up no matter what. For a team without its best player for the next month, that has to be the plan every night, not just when there's a Cup game.
So here's what to watch. Can Wagner carry the offense as the number 1 option for a stretch, and can this team stop beating itself long enough to tread water until Banchero gets back from the boot? If Orlando keeps leaking points in transition and turning it over, the month without Paolo could dig a hole they spend the rest of the year climbing out of. If they steady things in Toronto, the panic talk can wait a bit.
