Jets' Training Camp Opens With an Injury List Traffic Jam

The Jets haven't even reported to camp yet and they're already down three bodies, including a receiver they just paid to add depth.

Training camp hasn't officially started for the Jets and the paperwork is already piling up. Adam Schefter broke the news that the team placed WR Tim Patrick and edge rusher Tyler Baron on the active/physically unable to perform list, while DL T'Vondre Sweat landed on the active/non-football injury list. That's 3 notable names sidelined before a single padded practice.

Adam Schefter laid out the full round of Jets injury-list moves as camp opens.

Jets placed WR Tim Patrick and Edge Tyler Baron on the active/physically unable to perform list. Jets also placed DL T'Vondre Sweat on the active/non-football injury list.

Patrick's situation stings a little given how recently the ink dried. The Jets signed the 32-year-old this offseason to add a steady veteran hand to a receiver room that's been searching for reliability, and last year with Jacksonville he quietly delivered 15 catches for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns in 16 games. That followed a brutal stretch where he missed all of 2022 and 2023 with a torn ACL and then a torn Achilles, so a body that's already been through the wringer landing on PUP to open camp is the kind of thing Jets fans will watch closely even if the injury itself isn't considered serious.

Baron's absence is more straightforward. The 2025 fifth-round pick tore up his knee in Week 14 last season and ended up on injured reserve, so starting camp on PUP while he finishes working his way back is exactly the kind of slow-play teams do with young players recovering from significant injuries.

Sweat's case is the one that raises eyebrows for a different reason. The non-football injury designation covers injuries that happen away from team activities, and reports pin his to a hamstring that isn't considered a long-term concern. Still, for a Jets defensive line that leaned on Sweat as a rookie space-eater last season, any missed practice reps in July matter when the goal is building chemistry with a new-look front before Week 1.

None of these three are officially out for the season, and PUP/NFI designations are common camp housekeeping that plenty of players work off within a couple weeks. But with veterans reporting July 28 and practices kicking off the next day, the Jets now have to navigate install periods without a receiver they just invested in and two young defensive pieces they're counting on to take a step. It's not a crisis yet, but it's a list worth tracking as August rolls on and roster cuts start looming.
