Broncos Put Jonah Coleman On IR With High Ankle Sprain

TLDR: The Broncos put rookie RB Jonah Coleman on short-term IR with a high ankle sprain, and he is expected back for the Cardinals game in late October.

  1. Just when Denver's rookie back was getting going, he's out. Jonah Coleman hurt his ankle against the Jaguars, and on Saturday it became official: it's a high ankle sprain, he's going on short-term injured reserve, and the Broncos will be without him for the next few weeks.

The good news is that it isn't a season-ender. Coleman is expected back when he's first eligible, on Oct. 25 against Arizona. The IR move means he misses at least 3 more games, and he had already been ruled out of Sunday night's game against the Rams. With a high ankle sprain, the Broncos are playing it smart and putting the kid on the shelf instead of letting him limp through it.

The worst part is how he got hurt. Coleman injured the ankle on his very first touch against Jacksonville and then played the whole game on it anyway. He scored the first touchdown of his career on a 3-yard run, and 33 of his 39 rushing yards came on the final possession, when Denver ran out the last 4:41 to put the game away. That's a 4th-round rookie closing out a win on a bad wheel. You love the toughness. The ankle didn't.

A hit to #Broncos RB depth.

RapSheet said it in 6 words, and he's right. Denver still has bodies in the backfield, though. J.K. Dobbins is lined up to be the lead back against the Rams now that his hamstring is fine, RJ Harvey has been cleared from his own hamstring issue and practiced fully, and Tyler Badie was a full participant Wednesday. Sean Payton said the team would "be OK" at running back. That's a lot of recently healed hamstrings to lean on for a Sunday night game against a good team.

#Bromcos IR Jonah Coleman, sign Mitch Fraboni to 53, elevate Adam Prentice, Kolbe Katsis

The move that fills Coleman's roster spot has nothing to do with running back. Mitch Fraboni is a long snapper, promoted from the practice squad to the 53. Fullback Adam Prentice and WR Kolbe Katsis were elevated for Sunday, so if you want a new body in the backfield, Prentice is the one to watch.

Now it's about getting through the next month. Dobbins and Harvey have to keep the run game going with Coleman sidelined, and if the ankle heals on time, the rookie comes back in time for Arizona on Oct. 25 with fresh legs. Circle that date, Broncos fans.
