Josh Hoover out, Grant Wilson in for Indiana vs. Minnesota

The hit that ended Hoover's afternoon came late in the first half, and it landed on a quarterback who was already hurt.

Josh Hoover took a big hit here on the late hit. He’s been dealing with injuries since Ohio State game.
That second sentence matters most. Hoover hurt his right throwing arm and wrist in the second half of the 19-15 loss to Ohio State. He went out briefly, came back and finished 20-of-40 for 296 yards. He played through it at Michigan the next week and looked like a guy playing hurt. Before the injury he was one of the best quarterbacks in the country: 1,660 passing yards, 19 total touchdowns, 0 interceptions and the No. 2 QBR in the nation. He wasn't that guy against Minnesota. He was 8-of-19 for 119 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception at the half.

Indiana makes quarterback change, goes to backup Grant Wilson at halftime. Wilson is in his 2nd year as a backup at IU after transferring from Old Dominion. #iufb What he did at ODU: t.co/qkZYvgCudG
Wilson isn't some freshman being thrown into the fire. He started his career at Fordham, made 14 starts at Old Dominion across 2023 and 2024, and came to Bloomington before the 2025 season knowing he'd be the backup. He'd never started a game as a Hoosier. Curt Cignetti also didn't decide this on the spot. After Michigan, Cignetti said there was 'a lot of discussion about Grant Wilson and Josh Hoover in the second half because Grant had a good week of practice.' Indiana talked about pulling Hoover in Ann Arbor and didn't. At home against Minnesota, it did.
Then everyone started watching the sideline. Hoover was in the timeout huddle with his helmet off while Wilson stayed in at quarterback, and the Michigan comparison was already making the rounds.

9:13 left 3Q | Minnesota punts the ball back to Indiana. This is increasingly looking a lot like the Michigan game. Up to the defense to keep #iufb in this one, and it's off to a solid start forcing the punt here. Josh Hoover was in the timeout huddle with his helmet off, Grant Wilson remaining at QB though.
Some people read the helmet as Hoover getting ready to go back in. The Daily Hoosier's read was more boring: he was probably just listening to the play calls.

Josh Hoover does have his helmet in his hand, but it could just be that he's listening to the play calls.
Wilson wasn't getting much help either. The flags started piling up in the third quarter, and a home crowd that expected a top-5 team to handle Minnesota got quiet in a hurry.

Penalties starting to add up on Indiana now. Just a messy all-around performance from the Hoosiers right now, and the crowd is nervous. #iufb
Whatever the final score, this is the problem now. Indiana came into the day 4th in the country with a QB it said would be 'fine and better this week,' and the guy it called probable got pulled at halftime. If Hoover's arm doesn't get right, Indiana's playoff run goes through a 6th-year transfer who'd been a career backup in Bloomington. Next up is Cignetti's Monday press conference, where he'll have to say whether this was a one-week move or the new plan.
