Tennessee just landed a quarterback who won't even be eligible to sign for another year and a half, and the Vols couldn't be happier about it. Kaden Craft, a 6-5, 215-pound four-star out of Lake Norman High in North Carolina, announced Monday that he's committing to Tennessee over a finalist group that included Ole Miss, Michigan and Florida.

Craft isn't some under-the-radar flier, either. He's the No. 8 QB in the 2028 Rivals Industry Rankings, and reporting elsewhere has him pegged even higher on other boards, including ESPN's list of dual-threat passers. As a sophomore starter this past season he completed 60% of his throws for 1,739 yards and 17 touchdowns against just 4 picks over 20 games, a résumé that had programs across the SEC and Big Ten circling well before he was old enough to drive to most of his visits.
The pitch that won him over reportedly wasn't the jersey or the conference logo — it was Josh Heupel himself. Craft has said his decision started with the head coach, pointing to the fact that Heupel played quarterback and stays hands-on in the QB room as the deciding factor for his own development. Tennessee QB coach Joey Halzle was reportedly part of that sales pitch too, and together they made Craft the first commitment of Heupel's entire 2028 class.
This isn't Tennessee's first early splash at the position, either. The Vols already have three-star 2027 QB Derrick Baker committed since February, and they're still developing five-star freshman Faizon Brandon behind the scenes. Stacking quarterback commitments this far out is a deliberate strategy under Heupel — get ahead of the market before the rest of the SEC even opens its board.
For Ole Miss, Michigan and Florida, this one stings a little more than a typical miss given how far Craft is from actually playing college football. Programs don't usually go all-in on a 2028 quarterback this early unless they think he's special, and Tennessee just beat three blue bloods to the punch on a kid who could be running the Vols' offense in 2028 as a true freshman with a real shot to start early. Everyone else in that class of 2028 quarterback race is now on notice.
