For a fourth-year pass-catcher trying to carve out targets, that's a logjam with no path through it.

It's a rare bit of candor from a head coach — most trade explanations get sanded down into coach-speak about "wishing him well" and "the business of football." Vrabel instead admitted the roster crunch would've buried Boutte on gameday inactives list after inactives list, and that shipping him to Houston, where a fresh depth chart and different coaching staff exist, actually gives him a real shot at snaps.
For the Texans, it's a low-cost swing on a player who flashed enough in limited chances to be worth a look. For the Patriots, it's addition by subtraction on a crowded position group that no longer had room for a developmental piece. Worth watching now is whether Boutte can actually carve out a role in Houston's offense — because if he can't beat out that competition either, this trade becomes a footnote instead of the fresh start Vrabel is selling it as.
