Keaton Mitchell lands on Chargers injury report after boot

TLDR: Keaton Mitchell was seen in a walking boot on his left foot Wednesday after telling reporters he was OK, and the Chargers then added him to the injury report as limited with an ankle injury.
The first sign came in the open locker room, where Mitchell was not yet on the injury report and was telling everyone he was fine.
A guy saying he's OK while his left foot sits in a walking boot is a classic NFL Wednesday. Players almost always say they're fine. The boot is the part that gets people's attention, and about 15 minutes later the team had changed its paperwork.
So it went from not on the report to limited with an ankle in about a quarter of an hour. Reports say Mitchell probably hurt the ankle during Wednesday's practice, and he didn't sound worried about it. He was also on the field for part of the session, which counts for more than a boot in the locker room. A guy who's limited on Wednesday is a long way from a guy who sat out entirely.
Mitchell is a big part of why this matters. The Chargers brought him over from Baltimore in March on a 2-year, $9.25 million deal, after he spent 2023-25 with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina. He's the speed guy in a backfield where Omarion Hampton is the starter and Mitchell and Kimani Vidal back him up. Through 3 games he has 95 scrimmage yards on 21 touches, and his best day so far came in Week 3: 47 yards and a touchdown on 11 touches in the 24-16 loss to Buffalo.
Next up is Sunday in Seattle against the Seahawks. If Mitchell can't go, or goes at less than full speed, Vidal is likely the one who picks up the change-of-pace snaps behind Hampton. A home-run back on a sore ankle is a scary thing, because that burst is the whole reason he's on the field.
Keep an eye on Thursday's and Friday's practice reports. If he moves up to a full participant, the boot was probably just a precaution and everybody can relax. If he stays limited or drops to DNP, we'll know the 'I'm OK' from the locker room was just the usual Wednesday line.
