Kelvin Obot out for Utah vs. Houston with ankle injury

TLDR: No. 10 Utah will play No. 14 Houston on Saturday night without true freshman left guard Kelvin Obot, a former ESPN Top 50 recruit who hurt his right ankle against Colorado.
Pete Thamel had the news Wednesday afternoon, and it isn't what Utah fans wanted to hear in a top-15 week.

Sources: No. 10 Utah will be without starting offensive lineman Kelvin Obot (ankle) against No. 14 Houston on Saturday night. Obot is a 6-foot-5, 295-pound true freshman who came to Utah as an ESPN Top 50 overall recruit in the Class of 2026 and No. 5 tackle prospect.
This one has been coming since last Saturday. Obot went down midway through the 1st quarter against Colorado when he got rolled up at the end of a 4-yard Wayshawn Parker run. He couldn't put weight on the leg, and 2 offensive linemen helped him off the field. Utah won the game, but Morgan Scalley didn't have an answer on the ankle afterward, saying Obot "should be fine" while the staff was "still trying to figure out if it's going to be a high ankle sprain or whatever that is." Four days later, Obot is out for Houston.
Losing Obot hurts because of what the Utes asked of him. A 6-foot-5, 295-pound kid who came in as the No. 5 tackle prospect in the country got moved inside to guard and won the job as a true freshman. Thamel's follow-up lays out how much the line was leaning on him.

Obot has started the past three games at left guard for the Utes, which have the country’s No. 17 overall rushing offense. Obot is a key to the overhauled Utah offensive line that had tackles Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu drafted in the Round 1 of the NFL draft last year.
That's the real story. Utah sent 2 Round 1 tackles to the NFL in Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, so the 2026 line was a rebuild from the start, and Obot was one of the young pieces it was built around. He's started the last 3 games and the run game has worked with him in there. Utah sits at No. 17 nationally in rushing, and first-year offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven's offense is 8th in the country in scoring at 40.2 points per game.
Now someone new has to slide in at left guard against a ranked opponent, and Houston doesn't make it easy. The Cougars have a high-scoring offense of their own, and their front gets after people. One bad snap of communication between a fill-in guard and the tackle next to him and you're looking at 2nd-and-15. Offensive line coach Jordan Gross's whole week just changed.
Kickoff is Saturday at 10:15 p.m. ET at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Watch whether Utah can still run it straight ahead or whether McGiven starts dialing up more perimeter stuff and quick game to protect the new guy. Then watch the injury report next week. Scalley sounded optimistic from the start, and if this isn't a high ankle sprain, Obot could be back soon. If it is, Utah is going to find out exactly how deep this line is.
