The Raiders' quarterback competition wrapped before it really started. Klint Kubiak, running his first training camp as Las Vegas' head coach, made it official this week: Kirk Cousins is QB1, full stop, at least for now.

There's real nuance in how Kubiak framed it. He didn't just hand Cousins the job and walk away — he made a point of saying he wants Mendoza and Aidan O'Connell pushing him every day. That's coach-speak for "this isn't settled forever," even if it's settled for right now.

Adam Schefter's reporting put some weight behind the moment, noting Cousins is beating out the No. 1 overall pick to start camp, which is exactly the kind of headline that gets attention around the league.

Context matters here. Cousins signed with the Raiders in April on a deal reportedly worth $20 million guaranteed for 2026, with the Falcons still on the hook for a chunk of that money after last year's messy Atlanta divorce. It's widely believed this is a one-year bridge deal — the Raiders have a two-year, $80 million option on the back end that basically nobody expects them to exercise.

So the math is simple even if the depth chart isn't dramatic yet: Cousins is the guy who's earned first-team reps all offseason and, by Kubiak's own account, has looked sharp doing it. Mendoza, meanwhile, is running with the twos behind O'Connell, learning the offense at his own pace. That's the plan the Raiders paid for when they brought in a veteran to buy time for their rookie.

None of this means Mendoza's redshirt year is guaranteed to last through the season. Cousins is 37, coming off a rocky final chapter in Atlanta, and the front office didn't draft a quarterback No. 1 overall to keep him glued to the bench if things go sideways.
