Klay Thompson didn't just sign with the Miami Heat and go quiet. That winning talk isn't empty. Thompson took a real discount to make this work, reportedly leaving nearly $10 million on the table on a two-year deal worth roughly $13 million with a player option, according to ESPN. That's a 4-time champion betting on fit over max dollars, and the fit he's pointing to is playing alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. "Giannis is one of the best players of all time... I think we can both just help each other," Thompson said, sizing up the space he expects to get shooting off two of the best interior threats in the league.

Spoelstra's buy-in matters here too, and Thompson made clear the relationship predates the deal. He referenced Spoelstra's history coaching alongside Steve Kerr with Team USA, noting Kerr "had nothing but great things to say" about the demanding culture in Miami — the same demanding culture Thompson says pulled him in rather than scared him off. He's also leaned into the sentimental side: being close to the Bahamas for the first time in his career, he said, "feels like a second home in a way," tying his heritage to the geography of this move.

Not everyone's ready to crown it yet. Draymond Green, Thompson's longtime Warriors running mate, went out of his way to push back on the framing floating around the internet. "Let's stop acting like it's 2017 Klay going to Miami... he's going into year 16," Draymond said, defending his old teammate from expectations he thinks are unfair given the injuries Thompson has fought through since his peak.

Thompson himself doesn't sound like he's dodging that reality — if anything he's leaning into it. He called this "kind of a redemption season" to prove he can still impact winning, and pointed to how he's had to adjust his training as he's gotten older. He even got playful with the details, breaking down his new No. 11 (his draft slot, his childhood address, the 11th letter of the alphabet) and explaining that the number he actually wanted wasn't available. Joe Johnson, watching from the outside, framed the fit bluntly: "It's more of a Ray Allen effect of him going to Miami... he's going to be a great piece to a puzzle."
