Fitzgerald was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the first ballot as part of the 2026 class, joining names like Drew Brees and Luke Kuechly, and was enshrined in Canton just days ago. The Cardinals waiting until now to lock in the jersey retirement and Ring of Honor date tracks with that timeline — you let the Hall of Fame moment breathe, then bring him home for his own celebration.
The numbers explain why this was never really a question. Fitzgerald finished with 1,432 catches, 17,492 receiving yards and 121 touchdowns, all franchise records, and both his receptions and yardage totals sit second all-time in NFL history behind only Jerry Rice. He's just the second Cardinals player ever to make the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, joining safety Larry Wilson, who got the honor back in 1978.
What makes it hit different for Arizona is that Fitzgerald never left. Drafted third overall in 2004, he played all 17 of his seasons in Cardinals red, through good teams, bad teams, and one Super Bowl heartbreaker against the Steelers. Guys with his kind of resume usually get traded, get bitter, or bounce around the league chasing a ring. Fitzgerald just kept catching everything thrown his way and became the face of the franchise instead.
Picking a Broncos game for the ceremony is a nice touch too, since Denver was a frequent NFC-adjacent punching bag during Fitzgerald's prime run through the AFC West on his way to Super Bowl XLIII. Now his number goes up in the rafters and his name goes on the Ring of Honor for good, a lock the franchise has clearly been building toward all year.
