Leonard Moore questionable for Notre Dame at BYU

TLDR: Notre Dame lists All-American cornerback Leonard Moore (concussion) and defensive lineman Jason Onye (left ankle) as questionable for Saturday's trip to undefeated BYU, while linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is cleared to return.

The Irish just finished off Stanford without 2 defensive starters. Here's the first availability report for the biggest road test on their schedule so far.

Notre Dame standout cornerback CB Leonard Moore (concussion) and defensive lineman Jason Onye (left ankle) are both listed as questionable for this week's game at BYU. Moore missed Saturday's win against Stanford, and Onye hasn't played since the opener against Wisconsin.

Moore is the headliner. He's an All-American corner, and he took the concussion late in the North Carolina game. Notre Dame spent last week preparing to play without him, and Marcus Freeman said Jayden Sanders and DJ McKinney would start at corner if Moore couldn't go. He couldn't. Questionable is a step up from that, but a concussion protocol doesn't care about the schedule, and nobody's going to know for sure until late in the week.

Onye's timeline is the longer one. He got hurt in the opener against Wisconsin and hasn't played since, so seeing him at questionable at least means the ankle is finally moving in the right direction. Getting a starting defensive tackle back for a game like this would be huge, even if he's only in for a limited number of snaps.

The cleanest news of the day is about the linebacker.

LB Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is not on the availability report after missing the Stanford win, so he's set to play at BYU.

Viliamu-Asa sat out against Stanford with a thumb injury and was listed alongside Moore as questionable that week. Now he's off the report completely. That puts the Irish's star linebacker back in the middle of the defense for a road game against a team that hasn't lost yet. Safety Brauntae Johnson is still out with a left foot injury that's going to keep him out a while, so getting anyone back helps.

And the stakes are real. According to the Deseret News, Notre Dame comes in 6-0 and ranked No. 2, BYU is 5-0 at No. 8, and College GameDay is heading to Provo. The Irish have also won 16 straight games by double digits, which is the longest active streak in FBS. This is the week that streak actually gets tested, and the beat coverage was already treating it as the game of the Irish season before this report came out.

So here's what to watch: Moore's practice reps as the week goes on. If he clears protocol, Notre Dame walks into LaVell Edwards Stadium at close to full strength on defense, with Viliamu-Asa back too. If he doesn't, it's Sanders and McKinney again, against a much better offense than Stanford's, in front of a crowd that's been waiting all year for this one.
