UCLA crashes Brett McMurphy's Week 7 playoff field

TLDR: Brett McMurphy's Week 7 College Football Playoff and bowl projections add 7 new teams and put unbeaten UCLA in his playoff field, the day after the Bruins won 17-15 at Oregon.
McMurphy dropped his weekly bracket Sunday night, and the eyes emoji says plenty about the headline.
My Week 7 College Football Playoff & bowl projections. 7 new teams make the cut this week: Miami (Ohio), North Carolina, South Carolina, Troy, UConn, Virginia & Wyoming. Also, UCLA crashes my playoff field 👀 t.co/0T5xMQ07ZN
The 7 new teams are Miami (Ohio), North Carolina, South Carolina, Troy, UConn, Virginia and Wyoming. That's a full sweep of the map: a MAC team, a Sun Belt team, an independent, a Mountain West team, 2 ACC teams and an SEC team. Most of them are bowl-eligibility stories. UCLA is the one that changes the bracket.
Here's why the Bruins showed up. On Saturday, No. 21 UCLA went into Autzen Stadium and beat No. 13 Oregon 17-15. It was their first win in Eugene since 2004 and their first win over Oregon at all since 2017. That puts them at 5-0, and Bob Chesney is the first coach in UCLA history to start 5-0. He's in year 1.
They also won it the hard way. Starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava went down with a lower-body injury in the 2nd quarter, and backup Ty Dieffenbach finished the game. The defense carried them the rest of the way, forcing 7 turnovers. That's not a pretty win. It is exactly the kind of road result the committee likes to see on a résumé in December.
Now the caveat, and it's a big one. The Iamaleava injury is the thing that decides whether this projection holds up. If he misses real time, UCLA is an unbeaten team with a backup quarterback and a defense living off takeaways. Seven turnovers in a game is great. It's also not something you can bank on every Saturday.
Still, the bigger picture is a little wild. Last year UCLA was nowhere near this conversation, and now the most plugged-in bowl projector in the sport has the Bruins in the 12-team field in October. If you're pricing their postseason odds, that 17-15 in Eugene is the result moving the market.
What to watch next: any update on Iamaleava's status this week, and whether UCLA can keep stacking wins in Big Ten play. Projections in mid-October are a snapshot, not a seed. McMurphy will redo this whole thing next Sunday, and an unbeaten team that keeps winning only climbs.
