Mariners Call Up Jhonathan Díaz After Brewers Blowout

Seattle is turning to left-hander Jhonathan Díaz for fresh bullpen depth as the stretch run heats up.

The Mariners made it official on August 19, selecting left-hander Jhonathan Díaz from Triple-A Tacoma. It's the kind of move that barely registers on a normal Wednesday, except this one came a day after Seattle got run off the field by the Brewers 22-0, with reliever Josh Simpson getting torched for 5 earned runs while recording just 2 outs. Simpson's the one heading back down to Tacoma in the corresponding move.

Díaz isn't exactly a mystery arm. The 29-year-old has bounced between the Angels and Mariners organizations over parts of 5 MLB seasons, carrying a 4.66 ERA with 33 strikeouts across 17 career appearances. This season at Tacoma he was stretched out as a starter, going 7-9 with a 6.22 ERA and 83 strikeouts over 111.1 innings across 24 games. Not eye-popping numbers, but that's not really the point of a move like this.

The bigger story with Díaz might be what he did this past winter — he helped Venezuela win the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a résumé line that plenty of September call-ups can't claim. Whether that international run translates to a September bullpen role in Seattle is a separate question, but it's a nice bit of flavor for a guy getting a fresh shot.

There's also a corresponding roster wrinkle here. Outfielder/infielder Luke Raley was transferred to the 60-day injured list with a left forearm strain, retroactive to July 31, which opened up a 40-man spot for Seattle to make this move without designating anyone for assignment.

None of this screams marquee addition, but that's how bullpen depth usually works in August. Teams don't need a savior after one ugly loss — they need bodies who can eat innings and take pressure off a taxed staff, and Díaz gives the Mariners exactly that as they try to steady the ship down the stretch.
