Pirates release Dominic Fletcher — again

TLDR: Pittsburgh cut Dominic Fletcher loose for the second time this season, even after he mashed his way to a 130 wRC+ in Triple-A.
Dominic Fletcher is a free agent again. The Pirates released the outfielder on August 19, and if that sentence feels familiar, it's because you already read a version of it in July.

This is round two of the same cycle. Fletcher started the year with Pittsburgh on a minor league deal, got released in July, quickly re-signed a new minor league pact days later, and now he's out the door again after reportedly triggering a release clause in that deal.
The frustrating part for Fletcher: he's raking. In 237 Triple-A plate appearances this season, he's hitting.301/.386/.485 with 8 home runs, an 11% walk rate and just a 14.3% strikeout rate — good for a 130 wRC+, meaning he's been about 30% better than league average at the plate. That's not a guy who should be scratching for a roster spot.
The problem is where he'd fit. Even with Ryan O'Hearn banged up, Pittsburgh's outfield mix of Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds and others left no obvious opening for Fletcher, and his big league track record hasn't helped his case — a.233/.280/.325 line with a 67 wRC+ across 377 career plate appearances at the MLB level.
So now it's back to waiting on the phone for Fletcher, a 28-year-old who's clearly outproducing his level in Triple-A but can't crack a lineup that doesn't have the room. Some other org missing outfield depth down the stretch might be smart to take a flier — Pittsburgh, for whatever reason, keeps passing.
