Mazzulla Wins Coach of the Year, Still Plotting Fenway Heist

Joe Mazzulla just got named Coach of the Year and the lasting image isn't a tactical breakdown — it's him casing Fenway Park for exits.

Joe Mazzulla is officially the NBA's Coach of the Year, and the honor lands exactly the way you'd expect for a guy who treats press conferences like a Coen brothers script. The Celtics head coach doesn't talk like other coaches. He doesn't act like other coaches. And the league finally gave him the hardware to prove that being one of one actually works.

The announcement landing for the Celtics head coach.

The clip making the rounds in the wake of the award has nothing to do with rotations, defensive schemes, or late-game ATOs. It's Mazzulla, in full sincerity, explaining that he recently visited Fenway Park and spent the trip scouting exit strategies in case he ever needed to rob the place. This is the Coach of the Year. This is the guy running the most storied franchise in basketball.

Mazzulla, in his own words, on casing Fenway for a hypothetical heist.

None of this is new behavior, of course. Mazzulla is the same guy who, during the championship parade, decided the appropriate celebration was cracking a beer over Hank's bald head on a moving duck boat. The man does not operate inside the normal coaching template, and that resurfaced parade clip is doing numbers again now that the COY trophy is sitting next to him.

The parade moment with Hank, dug back up to mark the occasion.

The bit that gets lost in the memes is that Mazzulla earned this. He took a roster through a brutal regular season and kept them locked in while half the league was load-managing into oblivion. But the reason this award hits different is that the guy holding it is genuinely, uncomplicatedly weird in the best possible way. Coach of the Year, Fenway heist coordinator, beer-on-Hank's-head guy. All the same person.
