Mike Evans out vs. Falcons with Achilles injury

TLDR: Kyle Shanahan ruled Mike Evans out for Sunday in Atlanta with an Achilles injury, and Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel are out too, so the 49ers go to the Falcons without 3 of their best players.

There's one bright spot here: the schedule. The 49ers have their bye right after Atlanta, which turns 1 missed game into a long break for a 33-year-old Achilles.

#49ers WR Mike Evans (Achilles) is out for Sunday, per Kyle Shanahan. A bye after that, so two weeks for the veteran to rest.

Evans got hurt in Monday's 23-17 win over Washington. He caught a 16-yard ball from Brock Purdy just before halftime, was slow to get up, and never came back. He came into that game questionable with Achilles and rib injuries after missing practice all week. Shanahan called it soreness that won't need more testing, and the team is calling it Achilles tendinitis. That's the good news. It isn't a tear. The bad news is that tendinitis in a veteran receiver's Achilles is something you manage all year, not something you fix in a week.

You can see how much he matters from that Monday game alone. Evans had 3 catches for 94 yards in the first half and helped build a 20-3 lead. After he left, San Francisco scored 3 points the rest of the night and barely held on. He signed a 3-year deal this offseason after 12 seasons and 11 straight 1,000-yard years in Tampa, and he leads the team in targets and receiving yards. Through 5 games he had 326 yards and 3 touchdowns. He's the WR1, and that's who is sitting this week.

He also has plenty of company on the final injury report. The full list is ugly on both sides of the ball.

That's 6 players ruled out. Bosa has now missed 4 straight games with the calf, which leaves the pass rush thin again against an Atlanta offense that just has to stay patient. Samuel is still down with the hamstring. The linebacker room loses Luke Gifford and Garret Wallow at once, and Marques Sigle is out at safety. Receiver was already short before any of this: Ricky Pearsall is done for the year with a knee injury, and Demarcus Robinson's ankle had him trending toward missing this week too.

That's why the one roster move that actually helps matters so much. Christian Kirk is listed as questionable with a calf injury but practiced fully Friday, and the 49ers cleared a spot for him that afternoon.

49ers release DL Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday, opening a roster spot presumably for Christian Kirk's return. t.co/tqWb4B5B4b

Releasing Ogbo Okoronkwo looks like the move that opens the door for Kirk to come off IR and make his 49ers debut in Atlanta. Right now Kirk is basically the most proven healthy receiver Purdy has. That's a lot to ask of a guy coming off a calf injury, and the depth chart behind him is a scramble.

After Sunday comes the bye, and then Las Vegas, where the 49ers hope to have Bosa and Evans back. That's the real target date. First they have to get through Atlanta with Kirk, whoever else is healthy, and a defense with no Bosa. If they steal that one, the 2 weeks off look like a gift. If they don't, the bye week is going to be a long one in Santa Clara.
