Passing a physical after a neck surgery means independent doctors signed off on him being able to take contact again, not just jog routes in a helmet.

The Ravens had actually opened camp cautious with him, putting Madubuike on the active PUP list alongside five other players as a formality while he got reacclimated to football activity and the team monitored his conditioning. That framing matters, because it signaled from the jump that this wasn't a worst-case scenario unfolding in real time in Owings Mills, it was a structured, deliberate ramp-up for a guy who's clearly ahead of schedule.

Context on why this matters for Baltimore: Madubuike is an All-Pro caliber interior lineman who earned a 4-year, $98 million extension after a 13-sack breakout in 2023. Losing that kind of disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line isn't something you replace with a waiver claim. A Ravens defense that wants to get back to legitimate Super Bowl contention needs its best players on the field in December and January, not just in July.

None of this means Madubuike is a lock for Week 1 reps at full speed.
