Patrick Mahomes is expected to get the green light for full training camp work this week, closing the book on a knee injury that's loomed over Kansas City all offseason.

It's been a long road back for Mahomes, who tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee during a December game against the Chargers. Since then, every offseason update has been a mini fantasy-football and betting event of its own, because the Chiefs' entire outlook hinges on whether their guy is right by September.

Breer's reporting lines up with how the Chiefs have handled Mahomes all spring. He made it through OTAs and minicamp, but was held out of 11-on-11 team periods while the medical staff kept him on a slow-play track. That restriction lifting now, right before camp, is the signal everyone's been waiting on.

The timing matters. Kansas City's 2026 training camp runs from July 29 through August 20 at Missouri Western State University, with quarterbacks and rehabbing players reporting early. A full clearance this week would give Mahomes several days of ramped-up reps, including work with pass rushers and traffic around his legs, before the whole roster shows up and things go full speed.

Andy Reid has never been shy about running one of the league's toughest camps, and that's actually the point here — the Chiefs want Mahomes tested well before Week 1, not finding out live against the Chargers again. Reid has publicly said he's optimistic Mahomes will be ready, and getting him full participation reps in late July is the clearest step toward that.

None of this means Mahomes is fully back to MVP form on day one. Reacclimating to live pressure after a two-ligament knee reconstruction takes time, and the plan reportedly is to build him up smart rather than rush him to 100 mph immediately. But for a team that's used to being Super Bowl favorites by default, just getting the injury question off the board before camp opens is a real weight lifted.
