Patriots trade Kayshon Boutte to Texans for Jaylen Reed

Kayshon Boutte is a Texan now. Tom Pelissero was first to report the deal, with the Patriots sending their fourth-year receiver to Houston in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick.

Adam Schefter followed up with the finer print, confirming Reed and the 2028 seventh as the return, and Jordan Schultz had the same trade from a separate line — three heavy-hitters all landing on the same numbers within minutes of each other, which is about as locked-in as an NFL trade report gets before it's officially filed with the league.

This one had been building for months. Boutte reportedly requested a trade back in April, not long after New England swung the blockbuster for A.J. Brown and added Romeo Doubs in free agency — a receiver room that suddenly had no obvious role left for him. He still turned in his best pro season on the way out, catching 33 balls for 551 yards and a career-high 6 touchdowns in 2025. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, both sides had every incentive to make this happen.

Houston's side of the trade is about necessity. The Texans lost receiver Jayden Higgins for the season to a torn ACL suffered during a joint practice with the Raiders last week, gutting a receiving corps that was already leaning hard on Nico Collins. Boutte slots in as a vertical threat behind him.

The fit talk started almost immediately. Analyst Hayden Winks pointed out that Boutte gives Houston something its current receiver room doesn't have — Jaylin Noel profiles as a slot guy, Xavier Hutchinson isn't in Boutte's class as a vertical option, and Tank Dell is reportedly still working his way back from a significant injury. Boutte, by Winks' read, was 'pretty dang good as a vertical guy' in New England, which is exactly the shape of hole Houston needed filled.

None of that is expected to dent Nico Collins' workload, though. Yahoo Fantasy's Josh & Hayden argued the trade shouldn't stop Collins from pushing toward a 30% target share this season — Boutte fills a need, but he isn't walking in to steal volume from Houston's clear WR1.

For New England, this is a clean, low-drama exit for a player who made his wishes known and delivered anyway. For Houston, it's a bet that a disgruntled but talented receiver can step in fast enough to soften the loss of Higgins for the rest of the year.
