Mike Chappell made sure nobody mistook this for a minor tweak. And he's right, this is the kind of structural overhaul a 2-and-a-half-year internal review produces, not a press release fix. The stated goal, per the Hall, is stripping out unintended biases that crept into a process with too many cooks and too much regional loyalty baked in.

Not everyone's buying the logic. Paul Dehner Jr. laid out the obvious tension: fewer voters means each individual's biases carry more weight, not less, and axing the Seniors category slams the door on players like Kenny Anderson who've been waiting decades for a look. It's a fair question the Hall hasn't really answered.
In an effort to reduce biases the HOF is REDUCING the number of selectors from 50 to 28. Explain to me like I’m 5 how reducing the number of selectors reduces the bias? It just makes the inherent opinions/biases of those 28 voters hold more weight. Also, eliminating seniors ends any hope for every single overlooked senior legend, like Kenny Anderson. I’m open to see how it all plays out and be proven wrong, but this sure doesn’t feel like the way to fix the Hall’s biggest issues. So it goes.
Greg Auman put the number in context by comparing it to every other major Hall of Fame. Baseball runs on 425 voters, the Hoop Hall uses 24, hockey's Hall has just 18. There's no consensus magic number across sports, which is exactly why the Pro Football Hall's jump from 50 to 28 reads as a real philosophical shift rather than a cosmetic fix.

None of this changes what happened to Belichick, but it will shape everyone who comes after him. The new process kicks in with the Class of 2027, and with a tighter room of 25 voting selectors plus 3 alternates, and no more automatic seat for each of the 32 team markets, next year's ballot debates are going to look nothing like the ones that just kept him out.
