Kirk Cousins beats out Fernando Mendoza for Raiders Week 1 job

The Raiders wrapped their preseason slate with Kirk Cousins getting the start and the bulk of the first-team reps, exactly the kind of workload you hand your Week 1 quarterback, not the guy competing for the job. Mike Garafolo flagged it before kickoff, noting warmups pointed toward Cousins and the starters getting real run in the finale.

Cousins delivered exactly what a vet trying to lock down a job is supposed to deliver: efficient, unspectacular, two series that ended in two field goals. Nothing flashy, no turnovers, no drama. That's the whole pitch with Cousins at this stage of his career — he's not walking into Allegiant Stadium to wow anybody, he's there to be steady while the Raiders figure out their real long-term answer.

That long-term answer is Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick who signed a four-year, fully guaranteed $57.27 million rookie deal this offseason. But his final preseason line was rough: one touchdown against two interceptions, the kind of stat sheet that makes it easy for a coaching staff to say the rookie needs more reps before he's trusted with the offense on Sundays that count.

None of that stopped Kubiak from playing coy. Asked point-blank about a starter for the September opener at Miami, he still wouldn't name one, and Ian Rapoport's sourcing captured the same dodge: "I still don't think we need to name anybody." It's the classic coach-speak stall, except in this case everyone watching practice already knows the answer.

Garafolo put the subtext into words Friday: preseason used to be six games, now it's basically three, and Kubiak made clear Mendoza could use more of them. But as Garafolo noted, everything Kubiak has said for months has pointed to Cousins getting the ball in Week 1. The Raiders spent big to sign Cousins for exactly this scenario — buy time so their franchise rookie isn't rushed into the fire behind an offense still finding itself under a first-year head coach. Whether Kubiak ever says Cousins' name out loud before kickoff at Miami is basically irrelevant at this point; the depth chart already talked.
