Raiders bet on a top-10 talent who fell to Round 4

It's the kind of move that flies under the radar in late July but says a lot about how a front office actually values talent versus risk. McCoy was, by a lot of accounts, the best cover corner in this draft class on tape alone -- 6-foot, 188 pounds, a 4.37 forty and a 38-inch vertical, with 6 interceptions and 16 passes defensed over his two healthy seasons at Tennessee. Teams that had him rated in the top 10 to top 16 overall watched him slide all the way to pick 101 in the fourth round.

So why did a player with that kind of ceiling last until Day 3? A torn ACL in January 2025 wiped out his entire final college season, and that alone usually knocks a guy down a round or two. But the bigger issue for NFL medical staffs reportedly wasn't the ACL recovery itself -- it was a bone plug used to repair a cartilage defect in the same knee, which had some team doctors concerned he could eventually need another surgery down the line.

That's the trade-off Las Vegas is making here. Get a potential shutdown corner at fourth-round cost, or get burned by the same knee that scared half the league off. McCoy said at the combine he was fully recovered and ready to go, and the tape from his sophomore and junior years -- suffocating man coverage, fluid hips, instinctive zone reads -- is exactly the profile teams covet on the outside.

Getting the contract signed now, right before training camp opens, matters more than it might look. It clears the paperwork so McCoy can actually practice with the team instead of showing up to camp in limbo, and it gives the Raiders' coaching staff real reps to evaluate where he stands physically after basically a year and a half away from live football.

For a Raiders secondary that needed depth and ceiling at corner, landing a player with a first-round grade at a fourth-round price is the definition of value drafting -- if the knee holds up. That's the whole bet now: camp reps, health checks and whether the medical flags that dropped him were an overreaction or a real warning sign.
