49ers' WR Room Is Falling Apart Before Camp Even Gets Going

Ricky Pearsall's knee is swollen again, season-ending surgery is reportedly on the table, and the 49ers' receiver room is suddenly a mess.

The 49ers can't catch a break at receiver. Ricky Pearsall is dealing with swelling in the same knee that cost him 6 games last season with a PCL injury, and San Francisco is reportedly exploring "all options" to fix it — which is the kind of vague, ominous phrasing that makes fans assume the worst.

The initial report on Pearsall's knee swelling and the team's concern.

This isn't Pearsall's first rodeo with bad injury luck. He missed most of his rookie training camp with nagging injuries, then got shot in the chest during an attempted robbery just before the 2024 season opener, delaying his debut by 6 games. He finished that year with 31 catches for 400 yards. In 2025 he actually got off to a clean start — 4 games in before the PCL injury wrecked his season, limiting him to 36 catches and 528 yards with zero touchdowns. Now, less than a year removed from that original injury, the same knee is barking again.

The medical read on lingering PCL issues isn't pretty. A PCL sprain that keeps swelling this deep into the offseason often points toward a more invasive fix than rest and rehab.

The downside scenario being floated if the swelling doesn't resolve: season-ending surgery.

It seems like the treatment for a lingering PCL injury would be season-ending surgery. That's the Ricky Pearsall downside case right now.

Making matters worse, Pearsall isn't the only banged-up name in that room. Christian Kirk, San Francisco's big free-agent slot addition this offseason, strained his calf on the very first day of training camp and has already been sidelined multiple days. Kirk has missed 18 games over the last 3 seasons combined, so this is a familiar and unwelcome pattern for a guy the Niners just paid to be a reliable chain-mover.

With Pearsall's outlook murky and Kirk banged up before he's even played a snap in the Bay, the depth chart behind Brandon Aiyuk is suddenly wide open — and De'Zhaun Stribling's name is popping up as the guy who could inherit real Week 1 reps.

The case for Stribling sliding into the WR2 role if Pearsall and Kirk are both compromised.

De'Zhaun Stribling pathway to WR2 in Week 1 is suddenly staring us in the face.

None of this is doom for San Francisco's passing game just yet — Aiyuk is still the alpha and Kirk's issue is a calf strain, not a structural knee problem. But a receiver room that was supposed to be a strength now has real question marks at 2 of its top 3 spots, and training camp hasn't even hit the padded-practice stretch. Worth watching how Kyle Shanahan handles reps the rest of camp, and whether "all options" for Pearsall ends up meaning a scope, a redshirt year, or something the team can manage around.
