Luther Burden III got tangled up with cornerback Tyrique Stevenson during red zone one-on-ones in Saturday's practice and came away with a groin injury that's going to keep him out for the rest of camp. Sources told ESPN the second-year receiver is expected to miss the entire preseason, but Chicago is optimistic he'll be good to go for the season opener against Carolina.

That's the good news buried in a headline that sounds scarier than it is. A groin injury in early August is annoying, not catastrophic, and the fact the Bears are already penciling him in for Week 1 tells you the medical staff isn't worried about a lingering issue. Preseason reps matter for depth guys fighting for a roster spot. For Burden, who's already locked into a featured role, missing three exhibition games against backups is basically a non-event.

Burden was a second-round pick in 2025 out of Missouri and immediately looked like one of the more polished route runners in that class. He caught 47 of 60 targets for 652 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie despite starting the year buried on the depth chart behind Chicago's veteran options. By the numbers, he was elite once he got on the field, leading all receivers in average separation and trailing only Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Puka Nacua in yards per route run.

That efficiency is exactly why fantasy managers were already circling him as a breakout candidate before this injury news dropped. Burden's ADP has been sitting around WR20-21, roughly the 38th to 47th overall pick depending on format, which puts him solidly in the fourth or fifth round of most drafts. That's a friendly discount for a guy with his target-earning profile, especially with Ben Johnson now running Chicago's offense and a full training camp under his belt as QB1's expected security blanket underneath.

The fantasy question isn't whether Burden is talented, it's how the target pie gets split in a crowded Bears passing game that also features Rome Odunze and tight end Colston Loveland. Odunze is currently going about 15 picks after Burden, which tells you the market already trusts Burden as the primary weapon in that room. A clean bill of health for Week 1 does nothing to change that pecking order, and there's a real case this injury news should be a buying opportunity if it causes any draft-day hesitation among managers scanning the injury report.

Where this actually matters is in best ball and dynasty formats where preseason reps sometimes factor into roster battles further down the depth chart. Burden isn't fighting for a job, so that's irrelevant to him, but it's worth watching who steps up in his absence during camp battles at the bottom of Chicago's receiver room. Zavion Thomas is dealing with minor knee soreness of his own, so the Bears' preseason receiver reps could get thin in a hurry.

The real drafting advice here is simple: don't overreact. Groin injuries that teams are comfortable ruling players back in for Week 1 from are not the kind of news that should tank a fourth-round pick. If anything, keep an eye on his ADP over the next two weeks. If casual drafters ding him for missing exhibition snaps against nobody, that's where the value lives. Burden profiles as one of the better bets in that range to outproduce his draft slot, and this injury doesn't change the underlying thesis one bit.

The next checkpoint is simply whether he's a full participant once the regular season practice reports start rolling in during Bears Week 1 prep. Barring a setback, this looks like a camp blip that gets forgotten by the time Chicago kicks off against Carolina.
